Assignment# 4: Criticism

Gender criticism is critical approache to literature by analyzing whether the writers' gender has impact on his or her writing consciously or unconsciously. We can see it through some strong words that writers used in their work.
From "The Chrysanthemums" by John Steinbeck, we can see some gender influence, also we can approache to the story with feminist criticism.
Imagine that, "The Chrysanthemums" was written by female writer. If it was, the main character may have been described differently. Elisa, the main character, may not be described as strong and fighter, but weaken for men. She may have been described as she was very sensitive if the author was women. Or female writer may have write more detail of the character's feminine side of it.
On the other hand, John Steinbeck, the author, told the reader how men think, see or treated the women at that time. As a male, it could have been easy for the writer. Thus,in my opinion, John did not give his male character as not much of around character. It could be his gender influnce.
Also, it felt like he felt bad or sad, in a way , as a man for how women were treated and wanted to have freedom.
