Assignment# 8--Poems

The story of "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost is about a guy who took a walk through woods which symbolizes that he had some decisions to make in his life. However, he decided to take a different road than most people would have taken. In order to analyze this poem, readers response can be the best way to do.

Since, all of us make a decisions in our lives, regardless of big or small, we as a reader have had experienced what speaker is telling. However, depends on readers' decision making, the critics of the poem will be different. In order words,if the reader is follower and not a risk taker or very much independent person, unlike the speaker, readers understanding and attitudes toward the poem will be affected by his past experiences and situations. Therefore, readers response is the best approach to the poem.

Based on the experiences and situations that I share with this poem, my understanding of "The Road Not Taken" is that people do not like blames on them or they are so afraid of regretting things that they have done, then they will find an excuses to comfort(feel better) themselves or give them a right about. In a way that we-people have this intelligence and power of living on our own little world with full ignorance and illusions, yet we are weak selfish tiny creatures.

Blog Assignment # 6

I expected ENG 102 would be boring and it would be one of "THOSE CLASSES"--you know, the classes that you are there sleeping, because they are required. But it has not been same as my wonderful imagination, not at all.Is it because of blogging or the readings or not handing in the "essay" which was written(copy and paste ^_~) at last minute?

Well, the readings have not been bad. But blogging business has been great experience to me, except missing one of the blog assignments. It is diffenetly less stressful than essays, and it is fun to do. After getting few comments on my posts, I started waiting next comments and opinions of others. Isn't it ecxiting.Their comments or should I say "your comments" were encouraging which I never experienced on any English Writing Class that I took.

Another great thing about blog is that it is very very helpful for us understand the readings better. We have more opportunity to learn adn see the readings from different points of view. Some of the points that others bring are hard to see on my own. Anyhow, this ENG 102, mE Like iT. But only thing is that I am not sure where I stand in terms of grades since I am not getting back any red colored papers of mine with revision requirements :) So would that mean I'll get a surprising capital letter at the end? Let's pray for good surprises.

Imagine-John Lennon
I like this song, specialy the part saying"no religion too,... living life in peace" To me it is true. Without religion or classification/seperation many can be in peace.

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Assignment# 4: Criticism

Gender criticism is critical approache to literature by analyzing whether the writers' gender has impact on his or her writing consciously or unconsciously. We can see it through some strong words that writers used in their work.
From "The Chrysanthemums" by John Steinbeck, we can see some gender influence, also we can approache to the story with feminist criticism.
Imagine that, "The Chrysanthemums" was written by female writer. If it was, the main character may have been described differently. Elisa, the main character, may not be described as strong and fighter, but weaken for men. She may have been described as she was very sensitive if the author was women. Or female writer may have write more detail of the character's feminine side of it.
On the other hand, John Steinbeck, the author, told the reader how men think, see or treated the women at that time. As a male, it could have been easy for the writer. Thus,in my opinion, John did not give his male character as not much of around character. It could be his gender influnce.
Also, it felt like he felt bad or sad, in a way , as a man for how women were treated and wanted to have freedom.

Blog#2 :Symbols and symbolic actions of " The Chrysanthemums"by John Steinbeck

Since Prof. told us that our blog does not have to in essay form, I decided to edit my blog assignment#2. And I have been thinking about it over days and days, specially in the shower some ideas are just time to be written down. Somehow it feels so free since there is no rules or red colored papers back. But on the other hand, I am very sure that it will be hard for you, the readers to understand and follow my writing. So here it goes, my very broken English.

Writer used the title, chrysanthemum, is a flower that does not look so delicate. It has tall stem and it is a fast growing plant. Also, it is strong to fight with cold winter. However, it needs little more care when it blooms. So, John Steinbeck use this particular flower to symbolize the main character, Elisa. Elisa is described in the beginning of the story as a strong and energetic young lady. Indeed, it seemed from the reading that she was quite protected when she was working in the garden. So did the chrysanthemums that she was planting
It implies that she may get used to protect herself from getting hurt or she is very afraid that someone hurt her or the flower.
To me, the most interesting symbolic action that writer used was conversation between Elisa and a man with wagon. For instance, in paragraph 50, the men saw how to approach Elisa, and he says how unpleasant Elisa or women are by describing chrysanthemums. but Elisa does not agree with him.
To Elisa, the men seemed that he is very interested to deliver some chrysanthemums to someone he knew, but his real intention was to get a food for the night. He just used the story of delivering the flower's seed to approach Elisa, and this way she would let him to do some "fixing" that he wanted to do for some money. And writer used the symbolic action like the men saying "Sand,ma'am? ...Sand? Oh,sure. You mean around the chrysanthemums."--which tells us that men has already forgotten about the chrysanthemums, even before he leaves.
Elisa saying to the caravan that she wishes to live like him on the wagon all alone means that she wanted a freedom.Specially, "...I wish women could do such things."she said, so it showed that women were expected to be in certain way and had no freedom.
Elisa's conversation with her husband, there are many symbols and symbolic actions that author used. One of them is about price fight. Elisa must have hurt so badly over the years by his husband and other men badly enough that she wondered whether men ever hurt or is there any ways to hurt the men back. But she found that she has been hurt worse than men who is bleeding to death in the "prize fight."
